WCAG 1.2.2 Video Captions Demonstration

This page demonstrates WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.2 Captions (Prerecorded) Level A compliance.

Why Captions Matter:

  • Essential for deaf or hard-of-hearing users
  • Helpful in noisy environments
  • Beneficial for non-native language speakers
  • Aids in comprehension and retention

WCAG 1.2.2 Requirements

Success Criterion 1.2.2 requires:

  • Captions are provided for all prerecorded audio content
  • Captions must be synchronized with the media
  • Captions include speaker identification when needed
  • Captions include important non-speech sounds

Implementation Notes

This example uses the HTML5 <track> element with WebVTT captions. The captions are:

  • Synchronized with the video
  • Accurate and complete
  • Properly formatted
  • Include speaker identification
  • Include important sound effects
